Herbert C. Hoover Building Renovation

GGA Architecture is leading the multi-phased modernization of one of Washington, DC’s largest National Landmark buildings, which, when built in 1932, was the largest building in the world. Currently, the building houses 3,500 employees and is home to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the White House Visitor Center, and the National Aquarium. Currently, the massive modernization and renovation project is planned in eight phases and will be completed in 2020 at a cost of over $600 million. It is planned that the building will remain fully occupied during the renovation.

The complete project will replace all of the major building systems, create additional office space, and preserve significant historic spaces including the main lobby, auditorium, former aquarium, library, and the office of the Secretary of Commerce. The building will attain a Silver LEED rating and include the latest government initiatives in perimeter and building security, energy efficient building systems, and high performance workspace design.
